Nancy Nixon Ensign
I am the Great grandniece to Edward Willis Redfield ,a new hope impressionist and a third generation maternal painter.
Presently nature plays a vital role in my creative expression and the art I create from nature’s inspiration becomes part of my identity as a working artist. Whilst living in eastern cities, I painted a series of abstract figuratives. The dreams of my life compelled me to do some, fulfilling a prophecy which I had within myself.
During my artistic years living in New York city I studied Byzantine iconography at the School of Sacred Arts and completed a large number of religious icons in 14th century style. Years later in Florida I completed Modigliani inspired nudes in pastels and also paintings with coastal views.
After an absence of twenty-two years I returned to my familial roots in rural western New York, I venture out of my studio to capture nature with my brush. I have plenty of references for larger studio paintings and some finished pieces out on location. One of the joys painting outdoors is experiencing how different the same places and things can look year to year, month to month, day to day, hour to hour. As I watch and follow the coming storm fronts, I paint until the raindrops force me inside to finish my work.
Traveling through the United States and New Zealand with my husband and camera, I took great stock into the vistas which I would paint later for my upcoming “travel series”. Each series in my life’s work is an integral step of who I have become as an artist. We can discover the bloom of life when we stop to enjoy its nectar.
